Right, people may use it if they really want, although it has difficult clauses. Like other version 1.0 CC licenses, it includes a warranty (good for the reusers, potentially dangerous for the licensor) and it does not allow the upgrade of derivatives to other licenses. -- Asclepias (talk) 20:44, 13 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Yes the circle thing. I don't want to make a mistake and would prefer you do it. Is that ok? If not, Ill try and try not to break anything! MaskedSinger (talk) 09:09, 18 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
There are many pictures of Stolpersteine already here in Commons, e. g.: Category:Stolpersteine in Stuttgart-Mitte. I took pictures of three more such stones. But I am hesitating to upload them because when I use the upload wizard, I am asked "Is this entirely your own work?". I think the correct answer is "This work contains the work of others", because the stones were made by Gunter Demnig.
Since I don't know, whether Mr. Demnig has a copyright protection, the wizard says: Do not upload.
But there are alreay so many pictures of Stolpersteine here.
What is the correct approach? Tdiet (talk) 21:36, 18 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
If the stones are in Germany COM:FOP Germany indicates that if they are in public and permanent then they can be used. {{FoP-Germany}} should be placed on the file page. Also US copyright needs to be considered, but that is beyond my abilities.
The Upload Wizard option "Yes, this work is not protected by copright law" could be used and you can add "{{FoP-Germany}}" at the next step in the "Any other information you want to add" while mentioning it is Demnig's work.
Photos in other countries may need a different evaluation.
Perhaps every file in the category should get tagged if they feature an artwork.
Agree. The Stolpersteine are usually paving stone-formed and have simple text (usually name, where they were deported, date of birth, date of death if murdered, etc.). --PantheraLeo1359531 😺 (talk) 16:31, 24 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Somethings go wrong with this subject, because there are two artists with this namen one born 1735 en the other born in 1852. Recently someone changed the name of some of the categories concerning these to painters.
See here. All the media files ended up in the main categorie: Domenico De Angelis. Containing works from both artist.
To add more to the confusion is that there is also this already existing Category:Domenico De Angelis (19th-century painter).
The recently chosen name for the category for the artist born in 1852 is: Category:Domenico De Angelis (Italo-Brazilian painter). I have some doubts if this is correct because i believe that the artist is born in Italy and did also work in Brasil but i can't find a source that made clear he permanently lived there or gained the Brasilian nationality.
I don't feel confidant about my skills here in commons to try to clean-up this category structure so i hope someone can help me with this.
Hi, I just took the definition from Wikidata, if this is incorrect you shoudl fix Wikidata first. Secondly, in Category:Domenico De Angelis we can just put a note for the other category. I think (19th-century painter) and (Italo-Brazilian painter) are just the same person, we should merge them. --Sailko (talk) 18:42, 20 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Sailko: Wikidata has distinct Domenico De Angelis (Q18663487) and Domenico De Angelis (Q15943290); I agree with you on the latter conflation, and that person is certainly Q15943290; [2] at least vouches for Brazilian nationality, but could be wrong; is there anything more you would need to fix this?
Additional remark: [3] (Getty) gives both Italian and Brazilian nationality but says Italian is "preferred." I'd say that even at best, that is enough of a quagmire that it shouldn't be part of a category name. - Jmabel ! talk23:13, 20 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Tagging @Sailko Thank you for your responses. I don't know how to fix assigning the correct category to media files after changes its name. Like i mentioned. This file now has the wrong painter assigned, and there are more examples. They were originally assigned to category:Domenico De Angelis (artist).
Second problem is that there are now two categories for Domenico De Angelis from 1852-1904. (19th-century painter) and (Italo-Brazilian painter). I think that should be just one. The correct name i do not have a specific preference and i do not no what the standard is here on commons. Personally i would go on the safe side and just use year of birth and year of death for both painters. --Geerestein3 (talk) 10:53, 22 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Geerestein3: Since it sounds like you are out of your depth, I'll set up the categories and Wikidata. However, since you know the subject matter, could you please make sure in the end that everything ends up in the appropriate categories? Thanks. - Jmabel ! talk23:22, 22 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
We haven't heard from Jarekt or Sailko, but this doesn't seem likely to be very controversial, and I'm just going to go ahead and do it. - Jmabel ! talk19:09, 23 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Jmabel I do not fully agree, as he died in 1804, which is already 19th century! It may make some confusion. Neoclassical was more clear to me, as his are is definitely Neoclassical --Sailko (talk) 15:24, 24 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
As far as I can tell, every piece we have from him is 18th-century, though it is possible that there is later work we do not have, or that something undated that we have could be later. - Jmabel ! talk02:24, 25 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, I want to create a stock image section on my extisting website. Can I upload images which I downloaded from Wikimedia Commons to my website? Two images of "Problem (Symposion)" by Akseli Gallén-Kallela
These two images are of the exact same painting by Akseli Gallén-Kallela and even their contents are pretty much identical. The latter is at a much better resolution than the former.
Do we need the first images at all, seeing that both images are in Commons and thus usable in all Wikimedia projects? If we don't, should all pages that use the first image be changed to use the second one and the first image then be deleted? JIP (talk) 00:13, 24 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@JIP: I'm guessing that all visual differences are just artifacts in the first one, so I'd say the answer is yes; if you are going to take this on, do be careful to merge all information before making the first one a redirect, because there appears to be some information on the first file page that is missing from the second. - Jmabel ! talk00:56, 24 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
- Jmabel ! talk01:07, 24 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Anatole-berthe: Perhaps. In Spanish "editor" mainly means publisher, not editing software. But look at the user's contributions on the various wikis: there is a pattern of very vague questions. - Jmabel ! talk01:45, 24 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hallo.
Hallo. Danke für diese Erklärung. Können wir das schrittweise nochmal durchgehen?
1) Foto hochladen. Das habe ich ganz sicher hinbekommen. Es ist definitiv da.
2) Einbinden. Du hast das eben gemacht? Wo und wie? Das war meine Frage! Kannst du das bitte detailierter beschreiben?
Dazu findet man nämlich keine Anleitung, kein Tutorial, keine Info...
Viktor ip (talk) 06:29, 28 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
thanks for pinging, @Viktor ip: if you could ping me, this will call my attention.
butterfly in Category:Burara amara
There's basically two alternative name combinations for the same type of butterfly. Hence two different wikidata.
trying to connected it to wikidata. I thought it was just annotation in the relevant wikidata, i.e. Multilingual sites /commonswikiCategory:Burara amara
with link in the category //-Wikidata Infobox-//
BUT, it still links to the wrong "older Bibasis amara", i.e Q4998125 and i dont see why!
The President of El Salvador posted a video of deportations[4]. Would a screenshot of it count as "fair use" for historical value?
The Presidential Press Office has also released some photos. I think I can only access them 2nd hand like from this AP article.[5] Would that count as either free use or fair use?
Fair use is not allowed on Wikimedia Commons, see COM:L. Non-free images and videos may be uploaded locally to English Wikipedia if it follows the guidelines, the photos from El Salvador's government are not free use since they don't automatically put government works in the public domain and if there isn't an explicit free license, then the works are presumed to be non-free. -- Asclepias (talk) 17:01, 26 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@TruthBendicoot: if I understand correctly from https://berlin.museum-digital.de/object/140197, the photo is by Ludwig Levy-Lenz (though possibly just published by him, with the photographer unknown; Levy-Lenz was a doctor at the institute). If the photo is by Levy-Lenz, who died in 1966, it would be copyrighted in Germany through 2036, so we can't use it. If we can't sort out who photographed it or just when it is taken, that's worse, because we'd have to allow 120 years from the latest possible date (1933 + 120 = 2053, so it could be used in 2054). In both cases, it would presumably be PD in the U.S. before it would in Germany (95 years after publication) so once it it is PD in Germany we could use it.
It's quite possible that authorship and publication info could be tracked down. If it was published before 1930 it would already be OK in the U.S.; if the author died in 1954 or earlier (and, sadly, quite a few of the people involved with the Institute were killed in the camps), it would be PD in Germany. Both of those dates move year by year. - Jmabel ! talk00:37, 27 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
If the image is unused (not used on any wikis), am I allowed to place it on any Wikipedia page if I searched it up here, or do I have to obtain permission from the author? Justjourney (talk) 03:06, 27 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Justjourney: From Commons point of view, there is no problem with any file on Commons being used in any language Wikipedia. Of course, that is no guarantee that the active editors on Wikipedia will want a particular image on a particular page. - Jmabel ! talk03:59, 27 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I tried uploading a bunch of photos using the Upload Wizard as usual, however after adding file names, captions and etc, approximately last 10 images of the same series did not get through at the upload process afterwards. I then clicked "retry failed upload" several times but it showed the same error message which I did not think much of so I clicked "continue" without them uploaded, in order to proceed to reupload those images again since the beginning. However upon reuploading these images fresh, they all returned error message "Could not store upload in the stash (UploadStashFileException): "An unknown error occurred in storage backend "local-swift-eqiad"."." for all files. I tried multiple times and on other browsers, but to the same result.
I then tried resend these images again from my iPhone (via Airdrop) to attempt the reupload, for these photos this time it says: Could not store upload in the stash (UploadStashFileException): "An unknown error occurred in storage backend "local-swift-codfw".". again, with multiple attempts leading to the same result.
Not just happening with UploadWizard - had some issues uploading earlier using the plain form, and having errors with Move+Replace such as

To clarify further: when something says "Copyrighted 1995-2003" that is shorthand for "The material here was copyrighted at various times between 1995 and 2003." There are very few situations in which a copyright extends for anything less than 70 years from the copyright date and, as Jeff G. notes, 120 years is often a better rule of thumb when authorship is unclear. - Jmabel ! talk22:37, 1 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
