Sculpted porcelain helmet inspired by iron man and mandalorian

Design firm Discommon began with a whirlwind of what-if questions. What if there were a helmet sculpted from porcelain? What if this porcelain helmet were inspired by Iron Man’s headgear? What if the Iron Man design were fused with the Mandalorian one, since they have a similar structure? What if the Iron Man-Mandalorian porcelain helmet were produced with ancient East pottery patterns in a ceramics factory over 100 years old in China?

Instead of just asking themselves these questions, the design team at Discommon brought them to life in the form of a non-wearable porcelain helmet inspired by Iron Man and Mandalorian’s headgear. Discommon states that the concept originated from a series of AI images they saw online. These helmet images resembled porcelain, piquing their interest in whether those images generated by artificial intelligence could be realized in the physical world. It was in fact possible, and Discommon’s collectible Iron Man-Mandalorian porcelain helmet attests to that.

Art object not made for wearing

Discommon clarifies that the Iron Man-Mandalorian porcelain helmet is not designed to be worn. This makes sense, as the art sculpture is best suited for display rather than practical headgear. The porcelain’s weight could also potentially cause discomfort and physical issues for the wearer.

On the bright side, the sculpted porcelain helmet is large enough that it might be just possible to put it on (though still not recommended). The design team suggests having a nearby hammer to break it off in case the wearer has the courage to try it and it does not come off with the use of oil.

Everything was created from scratch, and the ancient Chinese pottery patterns even contain hidden surprises for the wearers to discover. Once Discommon’s graphic designers outlined the structure of the Iron Man and Mandalorian-inspired helmets, they located one of China’s oldest porcelain factories to create a mold and ‘produce the weirdest thing they’ve ever made,’ says the design team.

The resulting sculpture, which is currently in production and will commence shipping in October 2023, makes it all worth it. ‘Maybe it’s a lot easier to create it in AI, but it will be a lot more satisfying when it’s in porcelain. Steady progress – if you have been following, we started from scratch and have created our own form,’ says Discommon in an Instagram post. As of publishing the story, the Iron Man-Mandalorian porcelain helmet is priced at 750 USD, and Discommon has even created a bronze sibling for the helmet.
