architecture studio designs its own offices in new delhi

In New Delhi, architecture practice Atrey Design Studio completes its own office space with a swelling, sculptural structure. Conceived by architect Arun Sharma, this workspace is completed as a home for new inspirations, designs, and ideas. The central theme of the studio revolves around the nature of trees. The design draws its influences from the intricate structure of a tree, emphasizing the relationship between shape and structural strength. The result is a studio that mirrors the complexity and beauty found in nature.

design influences drawn from the trees

The workspace for Atrey Design Studio takes shape as a tilted representation of a tree swayed by the wind. The architects design the central columns to act as the trunk, supporting cantilevered slabs that resemble branches. The outer shell, made of rafters, encloses the studio, creating a seamless blend of concrete and greenery. This arboreal inspiration extends to the interiors. Bare curved walls and ceilings create a unique atmosphere, enhanced by breathing green walls on each floor. Courtyards on multiple levels offer refreshing breaks, and strategic glass openings ensure maximum daylight, fostering a connection with the surrounding greenery.

Atrey Design Studio further applies its natural influences to the environmentally conscious performance of the building. Latent cooling systems on each floor provide comfort in extreme weather conditions. Solar panels on the rooftop contribute to sustainable energy, while rainwater harvesting addresses water conservation. The entrance to the four-storied studio is a journey in itself, as a glass pivot door welcomes visitors to reveal a natural material palette throughout. The basement, finished with concrete walls and bamboo-impressed ceilings, opens onto a zen-like lounge with a green wall and waterfalls.

As visitors ascend upward, the upper ground and first floors unveil designated design studios. These open, interactive spaces foster a productive work environment, complemented by attached courtyards. The second floor serves as a central point for seminars, presentations, and shared moments at the bar counter. The third floor hosts a virtual reality space and the lead architect’s office overlooking a green courtyard.
