new works at david zwirner gallery

Opening tonight at New York’s David Zwirner Gallery, a new exhibition showcasing the work of Yayoi Kusama is bold and playful — a celebration of youth, and a glimpse into yayoi kusama’s extraordinary mind. Titled ‘I Spend Each Day Embracing Flowers,’ the show will take place across three light-filled rooms of the Chelsea Gallery, introducing the newest works of the renowned artist which include paintings, sculptures, and a brand new Infinity Mirror Room. This monumental event not only commemorates a decade since Kusama’s first solo show with David Zwirner in 2013 but also stands as one of her most extensive gallery exhibitions to date.

flowers and pumpkins by yayoi kusama

Yayoi Kusama’s exhibition at David Zwirner Gallery takes its name from three colossal flower sculptures titled ‘I Spend Each Day Embracing Flowers,’ which dominate the gallery space at 519 West 19th Street, New York. Throughout her career, the artist has repeatedly drawn inspiration from flowers and plants, fascinated by the beauty of the natural world. These monumental blooms envelop the viewer, immersing them in a vibrant, contemporary garden.

At the other end of the exhibition, 533 West 19th Street opens up with three elongated pumpkin sculptures that represent Kusama’s reinterpretation of organic forms over several decades. These dizzying, wall-like structures — adorned with her iconic polka dots — create an environment that envelops visitors on all sides.

a new world of infinite dots

In between Yayoi Kusama’s flowers and pumpkins, the New York gallery houses the artist’s new Infinity Mirror Room. This otherworldly space, titled ‘Dreaming of Earth’s Sphericity, I Would Offer My Love’ (2023), immerses the viewer in a universe of round-colored windows as both natural and artificial light dances on all sides.

Alongside the Infinity room is a collection of thirty-six paintings, most of which belong to Kusama’s recent series, ‘EVERY DAY I PRAY FOR LOVE’ (2021–present). These vibrant compositions, characterized by bold colors and intricate details, embody the artist’s obsession throughout her oeuvre. Through meticulous repetition of shapes and brushwork, Kusama blurs the boundaries between abstraction and figuration, resulting in animated and densely worked pieces that explore the interplay of line and form.

Yayoi Kusama, a trailblazing figure in both twentieth and twenty-first-century art, holds a special place in contemporary artistic history. Her unique fusion of pop art and minimalism in the 1960s gave birth to an incredibly personal and globally resonant body of work. Characterized by repetitive elements such as dots, Kusama’s creations evoke both the microscopic and macroscopic realms, leaving an indelible mark on the art world. Her creative genius spans various mediums, including paintings, performances, room-sized installations, outdoor sculptures, literature, film, fashion, design, and even architectural interventions.
