atelier pierre-louis gerlier transforms xixth century home

In the renovation of this charming 1850s house near Paris, Atelier Pierre-Louis Gerlier orchestrated a thoughtful reorganization of spaces to enhance conviviality for the residing family, while preserving the structure’s architectural heritage. With the help of the design team, the owners sought to tackle the spatial challenges on the spacious yet compartmentalized ground floor, to create a place that harmonized privacy with sociability. The inherent challenge lay in creating a space that could toggle between openness and enclosure, establishing visual connections with each of the rooms while being isolated from noise disruptions.

reconfigured volumes enhance conviviality within

The heart of the XIXth century house was occupied by an enclosed cloakroom, previously taking up a lot of space while sitting underutilized by guests. The team at Atelier Pierre-Louis Gerlier transformed this into a dining room at the core of the project, engulfed with expansive glass walls. This design element enables the room to become a visual crossroad, connecting various spaces of the home while fostering a sense of openness throughout.

Moving ahead, the kitchen was relocated from a cramped corner to a generously proportioned volume. This new space was conceived as a point of conviviality, allowing individuals to gather around the cooking area while enjoying the warmth of the fire. The living room similarly was partitioned into two distinct zones by a large openwork bookcase, creating a division between an area for socializing and another dedicated to enjoying the cinema.
