an island escape — zenbo seinei
pritzker prize-winning architect shigeru ban has designed a timber wellness retreat for a lush site on japan‘s awaji island. described as ‘a place where you can experience zen’, zenbo seinei will offer guests relaxing open-air baths, healthy tofu-based cuisine, and yoga sessions on an observation deck with panoramic views of the small island.
‘you can enjoy the brilliant sunlight, the clear air, the magnificent greenery, and the stars shining in the night sky. it is a facility where you can refresh your mind and body,’ says the zenbo seinei website.

shigeru ban elevates a long timber structure
located on a ridge of the site, the main building spans 90 meters long and 7.2 meters wide. the structure is raised high above the ground, giving guests elevated views over the natural landscape. the building cantilevers on one side and wooden vierendeel trusses on the first floor afford a huge 21-meter span. the architect says the whole second floor will be a zazen meditation studio. the renders also show a cluster of small accommodation cabins on the grass below the large elongated structure.
according to recent reports, the zen retreat on awaji island is set to open in april 2022.
