Rooydaad Architects Unveils Innovative Orange Gallery

Rooydaad Architects’ Orange Gallery in Tehran features an inventive approach to maximizing a ten-square-meter space, transforming it into a functional area that serves as both an art gallery and art class. The design emphasizes adaptability, integrating elements that allow for seamless transitions within the small space.

The concept introduces a ‘white cube’ space, with an orange-colored floor and ceiling, as well as a rotating table that adds energy to the space. Recycled wood waste was used to create 1,500 pins on the cube’s walls, enabling flexibility in hanging paintings anywhere within the gallery.

Orange Gallery serves as a studio, classroom and exhibition space

The project evolved from a collaboration with Marziyeh, a former partner architect turned painter, who initially helped shape the concept. The design process was informed by her artistic vision and literary inspiration from Jostein Gaarder’s ‘The Orange Girl.’ This partnership led to Orange Gallery’s dual purpose: a studio for Marziyeh’s work and a classroom for her students within a modest space of just over ten square meters, as well as an exhibition space for her paintings and storage of artistic materials

The design challenge involved maximizing the functionality of the space. A flexible classroom setup allows for easy transformation into an exhibition area, while ample storage provides space for Marziyeh’s tools and supplies. The layout centers around a ‘white cube’ display space, with integrated storage cabinets and a rotating platform for painting oranges, a nod to Marziyeh’s artistic inspiration from Jostein Gaarder’s ‘The Orange Girl.’

Collaboration with a woodworker artist led to the installation of recycled wood pins on the gallery walls, creating a versatile surface for hanging paintings and reintroducing forgotten artistic techniques. Marziyeh reviewed the design concepts and ultimately trusted Rooydaad Architects to realize her vision, resulting in a space that embodies her artistic aspirations.
