Cave House is a natural extension of the island’s topography

Cave House in Milos is a digitally forged sanctuary that fuses with the organic beauty of the Greek landscape. In the untouched landscape of Milos, the residence emerges as a natural extension of the island’s unique topography. The project is a virtual collaboration between visual artist George Kroustallis of Minorstep and 3D designer Alvaro Polo, that draws from Greek heritage and the island’s geological features.

The concept stems from a profound respect for the island’s natural rock formations and a desire to explore architecture as an organic extension of the landscape. The proposal aims to challenge traditional architectural norms by integrating the built environment seamlessly with nature, offering a new perspective on spatial design.

Cave House is digitally conceived using advanced 3D modeling software, incorporating real-world geological data from Milos to ensure an authentic connection with the landscape. The design process involves iterative simulations to test the structural integrity and aesthetic coherence of the concept. Special emphasis is placed on ‘sculpting’ the rock, virtually digging into it to create the architectural forms.

natural rock forms blend with concrete and marble

The virtual construction employs concrete as a secondary material to the island’s natural rock, chosen for its structural capabilities. This is harmoniously paired with geometric furniture designs that blend elements of modern and primitive aesthetics. The austerity of the concrete is softened by the incorporation of natural rock forms and the warmth of Greek marble, adding layers of texture and depth to the space.

One of the standout features of Cave House is its fluid architecture, where spaces flow seamlessly from inside to outside, challenging conventional boundaries and offering a transformative spatial experience. Cave House in Milos showcases what’s possible in the realm of digital architecture. The design team aims to redefine space while boldly stretching aesthetic boundaries.
