POLIMAIR’s beluga chair kit is crafted entirely from recycled plastic fishing nets

monomaterial beluga chair by polimair

The Beluga Chair, designed by Arthur Gaudenz of POLIMAIR, is the first chair in kit form made from 100% recycled plastic. Revolutionizing traditional notions of durability and recyclability, the chair offers a solution to the pressing ecological concerns surrounding plastic consumption. Its monomaterial form derives from discarded fishing nets collected, sorted, and recycled in France, assembled without the need for additional materials such as steel screws, glues, or wood. As a kit piece, it further allows for the replacement of any damaged part while minimizing CO2 emissions, ensuring it lasts for a lifetime.

POLIMAIR recognizes that plastic, originally intended as a durable substitute for ivory in billiard balls, has since evolved into one of the greatest ecological challenges of our time due to its disposability. In response, the design team advocates for a return to the essence of plastic as a material designed to endure. To achieve this, the Beluga Chair, alongside POLIMAIR’s other furniture pieces, are designed according to four foundational pillars that ensure the production of truly sustainable furniture.

All models bear the label of 100% Made in France. From design conception in Paris, and raw material sourcing from coastal regions including Brittany, Normandy, Provence, and Occitania, to manufacturing in Auvergne, each step of the production process integrates local craftsmanship and promotes environmental responsibility.

POLIMAIR offers a 100% life guarantee to enhance durability. ‘With the kit we can guarantee if a part breaks, we recycle it and replace it. To ensure that none of our product ends up in the bin, we replace damaged parts unconditionally,’ notes the team. Designs additionally can be customized to suit the individual tastes and needs of its user.
