Sozai Center turns recycled apple waste into adam sheet

Studio Sozai Center recycles apple waste, or pomace, into Adam Sheet, an organic, translucent, and washable fabric that retains the reddish-brown shade of the fruit. Adam sheet is made from 100 percent apple pomace from Aomori Prefecture in Japan, one of the country’s leading apple-producing regions. It is here that discarded apple waste poses an environmental problem. Sozai Center steps in to gather buckets of apple pomace from local farmers and uses its research and technology to grind and transform the waste into a washable material that can be used to produce accessories and even furniture.

Studio Sozai Center ensures that every part of the apple pomace gets recycled, from the core and peel to its stem and seeds, leaving only the byproduct of recycled apple waste. As soon as everything turns into powder, the design team develops it into a sheet material without added artificial coloring to maintain the fruit’s natural shade. Sozai Center says that its recycled apple waste can be used to create apparel and finish indoor furniture. So far, the sheet’s qualities include water and scratch resistance. It is also sturdy enough to withstand frequent washing with water or neutral detergent.

A testament to the new frontier of recycled-made products, Studio Sozai Center has already produced a card case and crossbody pouch using Adam sheet. Both products feature rounded corners and the transparency of the sheet made of recycled apple waste. The card case holds up to four cards in its front and back pockets, and because of Adam sheet’s translucent effect, the stored cards can be faintly seen. The same visual touch emerges in the crossbody pouch, an accessory that can hold smartphones, cards, and a passport, making it a suitable travel buddy. Both products are already available for purchase.

In terms of taking care of the Adam sheet-made products, contact with oil, perfume, cosmetics, and similar substances should be avoided, alongside the use of wax, oil, stain removers, alcohol, solvents, and similar products. Moving forward, Studio Sozai Center plans to keep developing its range of Adam sheet products to continuously contribute to the apple waste problem in their region by recycling it into a robust and translucent material. Adam sheet is created by a collaboration between KOMORU Corporation and M&T, and Studio Sozai Center comprises founder Shotaro Oshima, producer Ryohei Koda, and creative directors Miyu Ikeda and Takuto Kurashima of M&T.
