Street lights that double as electric vehicle chargers

There are two charging ports inside Alloy Design Studio’s EVIE, allowing the street lights to power up two electric vehicles simultaneously. It isn’t even imperative to manufacture EVIE from scratch, as Alloy Design Studio says the project can be installed in existing public lighting infrastructure. Once this happens, rows of ordinary street lights can be equipped with electric-vehicle charging capabilities, transforming hundreds of thousands of already established street light locations into charging ports for electric cars. The design studio says that EVIE can be placed on any residential streets too, ensuring that space for off-street parking remains.

So far, Alloy Design Studio’s target for EVIE is the UK, given that new conventional petrol and diesel cars and vans may be banned from sale in the UK from 2030, as the studio claims. This could pave the way for more electric vehicles roaming around UK roads, and by replacing existing street lights instead of building new ones, EVIE avoids being intrusive in terms of taking up infrastructure spaces and incurring additional production costs that Alloy Design Studio hopes to reduce.

EVIE’s dedicated app to monitor charging electric vehicles

For electric vehicle owners, EVIE can be more than just street lights with charging capabilities. Alloy Design Studio plans to install two wide-angle cameras that provide a live camera feed of the driver’s vehicle to EVIE’s dedicated app. This way, the driver can monitor if their electric vehicle is still at the spot where they left it, or if it has already been broken into or stolen. Alloy Design Studio adds that this function also ensures that others don’t go over their allotted charging time and gives way for others to charge their electric vehicle. EVIE’s dedicated app also allows drivers to pay for and book their time slots for charging their electric vehicles. It also shows them where they can charge by providing nearby locations of street lights with EV-charging capabilities.

If the driver doesn’t want to download the dedicated app, Alloy Design Studio assures them that they can still use the electric vehicle charger, as the street lights themselves have displays that they can click on to use their functionalities. And if the app isn’t working, the EVIE street lights have their own ring light at the top of the lampposts to signal to the driver that that’s the electric vehicle charger they need. As of publishing the story, the project is still a concept, but Alloy Design Studio looks forward to turning EVIE into real-life, street-light electric vehicle chargers.
