Dune House by KLG Architects stands on stilts in Betty’s Bay

Dune House by KLG Architects is a timber-clad residence that draws from the sinuous topography of Betty’s Bay in South Africa. The structure sits between the mountains and the ocean embracing the windswept setting.

Designed to harmonize with the sensitive ecological balance, the architecture aligns with sustainable building practices. Elevated on timber posts, the house treads lightly on the dune environment, respecting the natural terrain of the landscape. The distinctive roofscape acts as a shield against winds from the ocean and mountain, creating an outdoor sanctuary during varying weather conditions. The structure’s foundations showcase an innovative approach, utilizing excavated soil for stability and incorporating barrels as permanent shuttering to minimize environmental impact.

timber surfaces and gabion walls blend with the surroundings

The volumes of the house seamlessly emerge from the dunescape. The inhabitable zones are bisected by an elevated walkway hovering above the ground plane. The living spaces within the structure are open and spread out to the landscape beyond. Extensive glazed doors open to panoramic views of ocean, sky, and mountain. The use of sustainable timber and occasional gabion elements, along with an unfinished larch finish, allows the house to blend organically with its surroundings. The design team extends this aesthetic into the interiors, where the timber finishes serve as a backdrop for the inhabitants’ personalized living spaces.
