isabella ducrot’s textile art adorns dior SS24 show

At Paris Fashion Week, Dior showcased its haute couture spring-summer 2024 collection against the backdrop of textile artist Isabella Ducrot’s monumental installation, Big Aura. The set design featured twenty-three gigantic dresses, reaching five meters in height, positioned on a composition of irregular black stripes reminiscent of weft and warp. Drawing inspiration from the attire of Ottoman sultans, these oversized garments served as abstract symbols, reflecting the uniqueness and essence of haute couture.

paying homage to christian dior’s sculptural designs

The installation by Isabella Ducrot (find more here) complements the approach of Maria Grazia Chiuri —Creative Director of Dior women’s lines— who sought to capture the aura of haute couture embedded in the House’s rich history. The intentionally exaggerated proportions of Ducrot’s dresses pay homage to the sculptural legacy of the French fashion house, a motif dating back to Christian Dior’s designs in the 1950s.

In a nod to the iconic past of Dior (find more here), Chiuri resurrected the legendary La Cigale Dress, known for its expansive skirt and intricate layers, and reimagined it to create a series of contemporary looks. The installation dresses, adorned in gold, white, and vibrant red tones, adorned with delicate embroidery, resonate with the elements of the collection, all intertwining with the bold black-and-white geometric lines of the backdrop. This fusion of colors, shapes, and historical references forms a captivating result, capturing the essence of Dior’s enduring legacy in the world of haute couture.
