In 2021, Philippe Malouin presented his ‘Steel Works’ solo exhibition at THE BREEDER in Athens, comprising 35 objects crafted from salvaged steel using his signature ‘cutting out’ technique. Two years following the exhibition, NERO Editions has released an illustrated book with the same title, compiling Malouin’s striking works.

The publication documents Malouin’s creative process throughout the exhibition’s development, from the initial experimentation phase to the final shape of each object. Produced by THE BREEDER, the book also features an interview with the London-based product designer conducted by Felix Burrichter and Drew Zeiba, as well as critical essays by Maria Cristina Didero and Sophie Lovell.

Lavishly filled with Malouin’s own sketches and designs, as well as photographs of his finished projects, ‘Steel Works’ gives readers an exclusive insight into Malouin’s design philosophy and the techniques he employs to create unique and innovative objects.

Malouin’s work (see more here) reflects a blend of artistic expression and functionality, resulting in objects that are both aesthetically pleasing and practical. His style is characterized by a radical, utilitarian, and minimalist approach that is always playful. The publication accompanying the exhibition reveals Malouin’s ‘design by making’ approach, showcasing his creative process from the initial experimentation to the final shape of his designs.

The book is a testament to his dedication to sustainable design and innovative use of materials. The Athenian bookstore Hyper Hypo (more here) and THE BREEDER (more here) co-hosted an artist talk and launch event for Philippe Malouin’s book ‘Steel Works’ with Nero editions (more here) on Thursday, April 27th, 2023. The attendees were pleased to have the opportunity to engage with the artist and learn more about his creative process as showcased in the book.
