Hair room TOARU stands on the roadside in rural Saitama

Ateliers Takahito Sekiguchi renovates Hair Room TOARU redefining the concept of hair salons through a thoughtful architectural approach. The salon, standing on the roadside of a rural area in Saitama, Japan, is surrounded by traffic and parking zones as well as forested surroundings. The project, reflecting the local area’s history of timber transportation, incorporates wooden counters, reinforced concrete walls, and large mirrors arranged in a staggered manner, creating a connection between the salon, town, and nature.

Takahito Sekiguchi dismantles and recombines wooden panels

Utilizing materials strategically, such as RC for fire protection and CLT for roofs made from local wood, the design team maximizes wood grain expression while reducing weight, heat load, and costs. The design prioritizes natural ventilation, indirect lighting, and greenery, fostering a sustainable, inviting environment. This approach not only minimizes carbon emissions but also shortens construction periods and costs while showcasing a harmonious blend of architecture and nature.
